What Are The Chances Of Pregnancy While On Yasmin Birth Control Pills?

default
Posted on Thu, 7 Jul 2016
Question: Hi, I'm taking birth control pills (yasmin) since march and I had sex last week. He cum and that was like the 4th or 5th day of the current pills. I'm afraid if it could be risky, I know I shouldn't worry since supposedly I'm not ovulating but just to be sure.

Brief Answer:
You are protected.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

If you have been consistent with taking the pill every day, and it's been a full pill cycle already, you are well protected. As you've been on it since March, you don't need to worry about being pregnant.

It doesn't protect you from STDs though.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information.

Thank you so much.
Just one more thing, I have kind of diarrea, is not so much but I don't know if it affects somehow the effectiveness of the pills. It started a few days ago, I have just went to the bathroom like 4 times and is always more than 3 hours after taking the pill.

Brief Answer:
Use a back up method, but you are very unlikely to be preg. now.

Detailed Answer:
I'm sorry you are having diarrhea. Yes, diarrhea or vomiting that goes on for more than 2 days can interfere with the effectiveness of oral contraceptives. The good news is that if you were in day 4 or 5 of the cycle when you had sex, even if you are not covered adequately by the Pill, it is very unlikely that you would have ovulated during that time. It takes about 5 days for an ovarian follicle that will eventually ovulate, to be selected by the body to mature. And then ovulation usually happens mid cycle. So in a 28 dy cycle, ovulation happens around day 14 (roughly). So even if the Pill is not working well, the days you had sex are lower risk.

I advise using additional protection this cycle, but continue the Pill anyway.

Now about that diarrhea: eat small amounts (but more frequently) rather than regular size meals. This is less taxing on the digestive system. Foods that are usually better tolerated during diarrhea are apple sauce, bananas, rice, and toast. Make sure to stay well hydrated.

You might want to consider an antidiarrheal that you can get without prescription such as Pepto Bismol or Lomotil.
