What Are The Chances Of Recurrence Of Cervical Adenocarcinoma?
You do not need a colposcopy or further screening for at least 6 months.
Detailed Answer:
Hello, and I hope I can help you today.
Cervical adenocarcinoma has a higher recurrence risk than regular cervical cancer, and may or may not be associated with HPV infection. However, the majority of recurrences happen in the first two years after treatment. After that, the recommendation is to follow you by the standard Pap smear guidelines. Your oncologist was correct in not performing colposcopy with your first ASCUS HPV+ Pap, and the reason why your second Pap was not retested for HPV is because the HPV result is good for one year.
So, especially if you have had a hysterectomy and your entire cervix removed, at this point the chance of a vaginal cancer recurrence with normal cytology even if you are positive for HPV is extraordinarily low. Colposcopy would not normally be recommended for follow-up at this point, however, I think it is reasonable to wait until your doctor returns from his conference to discuss whether or not it is advisable.
Certainly, at this moment there is nothing that urgently needs to be done and I recommend discuss your further surveillance and treatment plan with your oncologist.
I hope that I was adequately able to answer your question today, and that this advice was reassuring. If there is any other way that I can help you, please do not hesitate to contact me further.
Best wishes,
Dr. Brown
