Brief Answer:
with appropriate treatment risk of death less than 5%

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Clots in the blood vessels of the lungs is referred to as pulmonary embolism (PE).

The prognosis of pulmonary embolism depends mainly on 2 factors: (1) the presence of any underlying disease- eg does the person have other medical conditions affecting the lung or other serious disease

(2)appropriate, quick diagnosis and treatment of PE

The size of the clot and the artery affected also play important roles.

About 10% (1 in 10 persons) die in the first hour if it is a massive obstruction/not treated appropriately/ heart related shock (cardiogenic shock ) occurs

Approx 30 % may die from a repeat clot in the lungs at some point

The use of the anti coagulants (prevention of clots medication) can reduce the risk of death to 5% (5 out of 100 persons may die).

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
