What Are The Negative Effects Of Using Saliva As Lubricant During Sex?

default
Posted on Thu, 30 Apr 2015
Question: If my husband used his saliva as lubricant during sex is that ok if I'm 19 weeks pregnant? I had 2 early miscarriages and now being so far along I am terrified of anything happening to my baby. We're both STD free.

Brief Answer:
Refrain from it, but no harm done in one episode.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
First of all, relax.
More harm will be done by stress and worry than by any other factor.
Saliva is a natural lubricant, and used by many couples during sex.
However, it is best avoided during pregnancy at least.
This is because there are various germs in the oral cavity, that might be transmitted to your genitals , thus causing an infection.
In future, please use another lubricant such as KY jelly or Vaseline, which is safe during pregnancy.
Dont worry about this particular episode, as you should be aware of the associated health risks, but in general, you should be safe and fine.
Saliva is particularly dangerous when your husband has an active infection in the mouth / throat, that would endanger you and your baby.
THe baby as such is encased in amniotic fluid, and vaginal infections do not easily travel to the baby.
There are many natural barriers.
However, any kind of potential infection, would increase the risk of a miscarriage / preterm labour.
SO refrain from using saliva in future, but it is unlikely that just one episode would harm you or the child, particularly if your partner is healthy right now.

Ok so I shouldn't give myself anxiety over this one episode? I'm a worry wart by nature anyways and with my pregnancy history regardless of my miscarriages being early I scare myself unnecessarily sometimes.

Brief Answer:
Yes, that is exactly what I wanted to tell you.

Detailed Answer:
Yes, that is exactly what I meant.
Dont fret over this one episode.
Just know that this could be dangerous, and avoid it in future.
Dont give in to worry and anxiety so often, it impacts your body and mind and your baby much more than external factors.
Try some yoga / meditation / relaxation therapies such as soothing hobbies / calming music.
Enjoy pregnancy and look forward to blissful motherhood !

Ok if you say I shouldn't worry as a doctor then I'll relax and just let my husband know we can't do that anymore. I didn't even think about it until after the fact. He did it and then I thought about it. We've done that prior to pregnancy and then tonight he did it for the first time since pregnancy. I won't worry since you're a doctor telling me not to. Thank you.
