No need to worry.

Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

It is not an overdose but underdose. It will not harm the baby. You need not worry. It is not a cause for concern.

Hi doctor,
He was actually prescribed omnacortil(5 mg/5 ml) which was supposed to be given 2 ml thrice a day( a total of 6 mg of omnacortil for the day) . But mistakenly I gave him 1.8 ml of omnacortil(5mg/ml) which contained a total 9 mg of omnacortil. This was given as a single dose in the morning. Soon after, I realised it and did not give another dose for the day. By afternoon , he became very irritable and cried a lot . Now, after one day, he has puffiness in his eyelids.
Is it something seriously wrong? Having read about the side effects of omnacortil, I am not able to sleep. Pls help me. How it has affected my baby? What can be done now ?

Brief Answer:
The dose needs gradual tapering off

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for clarifying. I had failed to notice the difference between /ml and /5ml in your query. Please pardon me for the same. For this type of medicine, the overdose (in measures mentioned) does not really matter; what matters is that the dose needs to be tapered off gradually. Abrupt discontinuation (especially in case of high doses) is the source of problem / side effects and that could have led to the mentioned problems. Since the tapering of dose needs to be regulated, you should mention it to your treating physician and should remain under his follow up.

I would insist you not to worry. Properly tapering off would help you keep your child free from side effects.

I have consulted his pediatrician today and he told me that he is fine and nothing to worry . But he dint ask me to continue this medicine as my baby doesnt have wheezing now and hence I have stopped it. My queries are:-

1) Are there any serious side effects if this is stopped suddenly after a high dose?

2)I had forgotten in nervousness to mention that one more dose was actually given to him. Its like this exactly. Night , I gave him 6 mg of omnacortil and after approximately 14 hours, I gave him 9 mg of omnacortil. So, a total of 15 mg of omnacortil was given to him with a gap of 14 hrs. his weight is 6.2 kg.
Pls let me know if this is an overdose? Are there any concerns regarding this dose i have given?

3)what is the maximum dose which can be safely given to him?

I am sorry. As I was terrrified about this, I missed out to mention all these details. Pls review and answer

Brief Answer:
It is advisable to taper off quickly rather than abruptly stopping it.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

Whatever serious effects that you have read about, actually occur on abrupt discontinuation. If I had a patient like him, I would have suggested 0.5ml or 8 drops tomorrow, 0.25 ml or 4 drops the day after, before finally discontinuing it.

Such a medicine can be given in different doses for different causes. I would therefore insist you not to bother about the maximum dose. All I would assure you is that your child is safe and you need not worry.
