What Are The Symptoms Of Arthritis?

default
Posted on Mon, 20 Apr 2015
Question: I have Fibromyagia, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, Raynauds and Sjogrens. My right hand has been swelling for some time. It is getting more difficult to bend my fingers and make a fist. It aches and the other night I was massaging it and I could hear crunching noises in the palm area and around the joints. I also have a small mass in the palm near the lower middle area. What could be going on?

Brief Answer:
Most probably arthritis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.

Your symptoms are most likely related to arthritis of your right hand.

Arthritis may coexist with Sjogren's and Fibromyalgia, they are all rheumatological diseases.

The palmar mass you describe may be a synovial cyst, especially if it is soft and moves when pushed. This could be confirmed easily by a mass ultrasound.

Another possibility that may be concomitant to arthritis is carpal tunnel syndrome, or narrowing of median nerve canal at the wrist.

I suggest you to discuss with your primary care Doctor above mentioned possibilities of your symptoms and tests needed to assess properly the diagnosis ( EMG and x-Rays of right hand ).

Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Do you believe it could be Scleroderma? We have a lot of autoimmune diseases in our family. My Dad had Paget's disease and I believe he had Sjogrens because he ended up with Lymphoma. My niece has Lupus, Raynauds and Scleroderma? The only thing is that at present its my right hand only. Also is it possible for Arthritis to cause the crunching noises in my palm and around joints?

Brief Answer:
Scleroderma manifests other symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again and thanks for asking back.

Scleroderma usually affects different parts of the body ( skin, digestive system, lungs, toes).

Symptoms of Scleroderma in hand and toes include tightening and shiny skin, in patches, exaggerated response to cold (this is a symptom of Raynaud's too), color changes, numbness.

I think your symptoms are most probably related to arthritis.

Hope I helped you. Wishing you good health.

Thank you for your help. I did see my Rheumatologist last wk, and while I like him he gives me no real answers nor has he done any blood tests. I did have surg. on my toes 2 years ago and they have not been right since. Podiatrist said I was allergic to Vicryl sutures. My 3 toe joints are stiff and crack when I try to bend them. My Rheumy did give me aciphex because I have almost steady burning and indigestion from my throat to stomach. Yesterday and today my stomach is bloated and feels full/heavy as well as my legs. I am just concerned but guess I should go to my primary for tests. Any other thoughts?

Brief Answer:
Physical therapy on your hand may help.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again.

About your fingers and hand concerns, physical therapy may help improve your symptoms.

Maybe for your stomach bloating you could use antiacid drugs, but this should be discussed and evaluated first by your primary care Doctor.

Hope I helped. Best regards.
