Is It Normal To Take 2 Hours For Synovial Cyst Removal Surgery?

My mom who is 75 yrs old, is having a synovial cyst removed and also after a new MRI dr. notices that L3 L4 need to cleaned up for degenerative . surgeons states might take up to 2 hrs instead of one hr now. Is that normal or is surgery and recovery more intense. ?
