Hi and thank you so much for this query.
I am so sorry to hear about this terrible
withdrawal symptoms that you experienced after stopping
trileptal abruptly. Having taken it for under a week, I would have expected the symptoms to be some what mild and not severe.
The main withdrawal symptoms of this drug are increased
seizure frequency and duration. This drug is normally used to suppress nervous excitation and as such, it would lead to a rebound effect upon stopping abruptly leading to increased excitation and seizures.
If you plan not t continue with this drug for any reasons, I will suggest that you consider tapping down slowly seen the severe symptoms you experienced missing just a dose. I will advice you reverse the dosage down to the starting dose over a week before stopping it to prevent the withdrawal symptoms.
In all, increased seizures and excitation,
anxiety,
nervousness, irritability are all possible side effects. Do not stop abruptly to avoid this. Slow tapper off should you no longer want to continue with this drug.
I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thank you so much for using our services and please feel free to ask for more information and clarification if need be. Thanks.
Dr. Ivo, MD.
