Brief Answer:
Hemiatrophy - causes and treatment possibilities

Detailed Answer:
Hi...Thank you for consulting in Health Care magic.
Hemiatropy is a condition usually present from birth. I would like to know when the diagnosis was made and also what made you to consult a physician or paediatrician, after which this diagnosis was made. Diagnostic features include facial, tongue, and ear asymmetry and associated decreases in length and size of the limbs on the same side. The symptomatic problems related to leg length discrepancy can be addressed by a paediatric orthopedician. The most concerning thing is the facial hemi atrophy which is cosmetically disturbing.

Coming to the causes of hemi-atrophy - it probably has a multifactorial pathogenesis that most likely has at its basis a genetic cause.

I have certain questions for you -
1. Is it hemi-atrophy of whole body or brain?
2. Is there any limb length discrepancy ?
3. How are her developmental milestones ?
4. Is there cosmetically significant hemi-atrophy of the face ?
5. Does she have any seizures ?
I would be happy to answer your query further, if you can get back with the answers.
Hope my answer was helpful for you. I am happy to help any time. Further clarifications and consultations on Health care magic are welcome. If you do not have any clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer. Wish your kid good health.

thank you doctor for your response. however consultations were being made having discovered our little girl tends to limp. when we consulted a peadetrician...we understand that one leg is longer than the other and also realise that one part of her face is slightly swollen than the other. our little girl is not developing rather fast as we believe she should even tho her bones are strong.

Hemiatrophy - Management and diagnostic options

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for your trust in me and health care magic website.

I take the opportunity to correct your answer. I think it is not one part of the face is swollen, but actually its the other part which is smaller than the other.

Regarding the limb length discrepancy, the treatment options are as below -

1. At one year of age it is too early to use any orthotic devices
2. Physiotherapy is the best modality of treatment as far your kid is concerned now, keeping in mind her age.
3. Delay in the developmental milestones which are another cause of worry for you, will also be addressed to in physiotherapy.
4. Further I suggest you seeking a genetic opinion for the hemi-atrophy along with a Neuroimaging including MRI brain to rule out hemi-atrophy involving the brain.

I Wish your one year old a bright future and good health. Hope my answer was helpful for you. I am happy to help any time. Further clarifications and consultations on Health care magic are welcome. If you do not have any clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer.

Brief Answer:
Suggestion of expert

Detailed Answer:
I am sorry, I practice in XXXXXXX which is far away from your location. And I do not want to give you a reference based on web search. I would look for my primary physician's reference than web based search. Alternatively experts from teaching institute of pediatrics such as medical university are good place to find good specialists. If you can find a medical university nearby, that would be a better choice as your kid needs a multidisciplinary team approach.

Hope this helped. I am happy to help any time. Further clarifications and consultations on Health care magic are welcome. If you do not have any clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer.
