What Causes Hyponatrimia In Old Aged People?
Question: Hello Sir,
My father age 68years is been suffering from Hypothermia from past 10 month. He has been hospitalized 3-4 time due to acute weakness. We have consulted various specialist like Endrocrinologist, nefrlogist, cardiac etc. All kind of test Cartsol, Urine, LFT, Free T3,T3,TSH are done every thing is fine but no exact causes are known yet for sodium loss. We are suspecting that it could be due to some medication he is taking. Here is his brief medical history.
1. he is diabetic from past 15 years. Taking Glimpride and metformin to contol that
2. ALso has hypertension taking Cindlipine 10 mg and telisarton for that. twice in a day.
3.Having Hyponatrimia from 10month now, sodium level falls some time 130, 125 etc.
4. Has prostate enlargement also. Taking Urimax
5.Pace marker is done for Sick cynes syndrome 4 years back
I am attaching all the reports and medication list. Could you please advise is there any medication we should replace? or what other causes can be there for sodium loss. Also could you suggest what are best medicine for Diabetic and hypertension with Hyponatrimia person.
Brief Answer:
get serum calcim for ur father.
Detailed Answer:
Hi, your father seems to have been suffering from quite some time. You already have gotten a lot of blood tests done. Just one more test of serum calcium and procalcitonin is required. Though rare, Ca+ loss in the body may also lead to hypothermia, esp when pt is weak otherwise.
Hope my reply helps.

Thanks Sir, Will try to get that test done. My father is in my home town which is a small place so might take few days. So I will definitely come back with that report.
What would be the treatment if calcium is low? also he is having frequent urination also sometimes even 15+ times in a day. He is on urimax but that doesnt help much.
But do you think that Blood pressure and Diabetics medications are fine for a Hyponatrimia patient?
Sir,Just read your reply again....he does not have hypothermia, I think I mentioned Hypothermia by mistake.........
He is having Hyponatrimia..... Sodium loss.... Sorry....could you please advise on that.
Brief Answer:
hyponatremia is a side effect of ongoing medicine
Detailed Answer:
Hi, its ok.
The prostate problem along with diabetes and urimax and lasix is causing increased urine production and repetitive visits to urinal. Whenever excess urine is produced it takes sodium out of body along with it. You just need to keep supplementing it.

Thanks sir
Can we do any medication changes to prevent it? How we can supplement, by taking salt or some-other tablets, He takes tolvactum (resodium) one per day? Actually his sodium is going low sometime 4-5 times below is normal level and he will feel very weak at that time... Any advise for reducing frequent urine?
Brief Answer:
do not change meficine
Detailed Answer:
There is not much that we can do to change the medicine. Take a urologist opinion in case his prostate needs surgery. Redodium is good. Along with that you can add inc salt to all hos eatables to a palatable level. Take empty capsule shells from market, fill them up with salt and give them two three times daily.
