Brief Answer:
COPD, pulmonary function test

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXX,

Greetings from health care magic!!! I am Dr Thakker and shall be answering your question.

I can understand your concern for your health. I will try my best to help you out with this.

Given your symptoms I would put forth the following differentials:

Acute panic attack

Cardiac arrhythmia

Myocardial infarction

Respiratory bronchiolitis

Pneumonia

COPD

Heart failure.

I would like to know the following details:

Duration of breathlessness?

Any wheezing sound heard on breathing?

Any leg swelling?

Restriction in daily activites due to breathlessness?

I would recommend you to have an ECG, X-ray chest and pulmonary function test to rule out the cause. Also asthma is very unlikely to start at 48 yrs of age. Usually it is COPD. Adult onset asthma rarely starts at 48 yrs of age. Pulmonary function test will help us to rule this out.

I hope this helps you out. If you have any more questions, please do not hesitate to write back to me.

Yours sincerely,
Dr Thakker.
