What Causes A Dark Grey Line In The Middle Of The Tongue?

default
Posted on Mon, 7 Mar 2016
Question: There is a dark grey line about 1/2 " wide starting about 1.5" from the tip of my tongue in the middle of my tongue and about 1.5" long. I brushed it with toothpaste and that did lighten the line but did not remove it. I have had a very slight sore throat for about a day. There are no other symptoms. Anything to worry about?

Brief Answer:
Usually a benign temporary condition.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HCM and thanks for your query.

I have read your query and understand the concern about your dark grey line on the middle of tongue.

Dark grey tongue is usually a benign temporary condition,so there is no need to worry much.

It might be caused by a change in the normal bacteria in the mouth (overgrowth of bacteria of yeast) which is more common after using antibiotics.

Other possible causes include :

-Drinking too much coffee or tea
-Smoking or tobacco chewing
-Excessive use of mouthwashes containing peroxide, or astringent agents.
-Some medications that contain Bismuth

1) I would advise to check if any of the medication that you use contains bismuth.

2) If you smoke ,it would be good to stop it.

3) Try to reduce the amount of coffee if you drink or brush your tongue after drinking it.

4) Dark tongue can also be managed with good oral hygiene.

5) Gently brush your tongue twice a day and rinse your mouth with a diluted mouthwash.

You don't need to worry .It is not of concern and it will be better in few days.

Hope it helps.Let me know if you have anymore doubts to clarify.

Regards,
