What Causes A Lump On The Left Side Of The Lower Back?

Posted on Mon, 1 Aug 2016
Question: Hello Doctor,

I am a 56 yrs old male who is in excellent health. I currently take no meds. I just went to the my doctor on Friday for a lump that I had on my left side of my lower back. He told me that I needed to have ab ultrasound which I did on Saturday. He call me that day and said it was not a cyst and was a hard mass approx 1.5 by 1.5 in size. He felt it wasn't Lipoma because of it being hard. I told him that this came out of no where. He has me seeing a general surgeon on Monday to have it removed and biopsy. How long does it take to find out and what could this possible be and what options do I have

Brief Answer:
It will take 5 to 10 days for Biopsy report .

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Some Lipomas which are deep seated will be hard in consistency. Other possibilities are Fibroma arising from fibrous tissue , Rhabdomyoma arising from skeletal muscle,Myxoma arising from myxomatous tissue etc.
As your doctor said, the best way for exact diagnosis is to remove the swelling completely and send it for histopathological examination (Biopsy ).
It may take 5 to 10 days depending on the Pathologist and the centre.
Hope I answered your query. If you have any questions, I will clarify further.
Wish you good health.
Regards

Thank you for your response. You stated other possibilities listed below other than Lipmos. Are these that you mentioned serious. I sure can understand my concerns.

I wanted to tell you that this mass is under the skin not on the outside

Brief Answer:
They are not serious

Detailed Answer:
Hi
The other possibilities that I have mentioned are benign lesions, not cancerous.
Nothing to worry.
A swelling of that much size underneath the skin cannot be a cancerous one usually.
Please come back after Biopsy report, I will clarify further.
Wish you good health
