Hello there, Thanks for coming to HealthCareMagic,
Let us first discuss this noise that you have been hearing when the baby breathes. Can you describe this noise in detail.
Is it a wheeze?
Does it happen when the baby is breathing in or when the baby is exhaling?
Is there a cough?
Are there any other symptoms? Fever etc?
In general, if there is a new sound that you are hearing that you never heard before, then it would be a good idea to take the baby to the pediatrician for a checkup. They will listen with a stethoscope and check what is going on.
Now to your issue with Polio Vaccination,
The recommended series of OPV (polio drops) is four doses-
one at about 6 weeks, one at about 10 weeks, one at about 14 weeks (or 4 weeks after dose 2), and a booster at 16 months.
There should be at least 4 weeks between each of dose 1, 2 and 3 and at least 6 months between dose 3 and the booster.
If your child has had the required 3 does and booster, then that is enough.
I hope this helps, Let me know about the breathing issue and we can discuss furthur,
Vinay
My daughter had following vaccinations in her 6th week:
HepatitisB2 ,HIB1,DPT,IPV ,Rotavirus
I believe IPV is for polio. Plz confirm do we need to give any other polio drops during this time.
On other part, i felt the wheezing noise is coming from her chest during inhale and exhale. It seems might b some sputum lies on her chest. Bcoz she was having some nose block problem some time back for which we had given saline water spray. Is it ok to give steam for infants?
A steam nebulizer will help. IPV is a different type of vaccine
Detailed Answer:
So, I think it would be a good idea to take your child to the pediatrician for the nasal congestion. I do not think it is a big or dangerous problem. A routine follow-up would be adequate. You should just have her nose examined to make sure there is no latent infection. Steam inhalation will help manage symptoms and help her breather better overall.
As for IPV vs OPV. Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) is used in situations where many vaccines are being given at once or the patient is suffering from an immune disease.
OPV (Oral Polio Vaccine) is an active vaccine where the virus is in a weakened state.
The effectiveness of the OPV vaccine is generally much better. In a smaller number of doses, a very effective permanent immunity will be set up. IPV on the other hand takes many more doses and the immunity may not be permanent.
In my opinion, OPV is more than enough and you do not need to give IPV as well. But I am not a Pediatrician, you should discuss this with your pediatrician when you see them next.
I hope this helps,
Vin
