Brief Answer:
It looks like Dupuytrens contracture.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I saw the pic.
It looks like early stage of Dupuytrens contracture.
Please consult an Orthopaedician, get examined clinically and confirm the diagnosis.
In early stages , radiation therapy will be very helpful.Surgery can be avoided.
In later stages, injection treatment or surgery has to be done.
Please consult your Orthopaedician immediately and proceed accordingly.
Hope I answered your query. If you have any questions, I will clarify further.
Wish you good health.

Thanks for the note.

is it possible to just be a strain? or something else?

i only ask because i am usually pretty aware of anything like this and i didn't notice it earlier today, then all of a sudden tonight it was there. it is a bit tender as well, but i've read that dupuytrens is usually painless.

thanks again!

Brief Answer:
Another possibility is Infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Another possibility is Infection and associated inflammation of the area.
So,usually I start with Antibiotic like Clindamycin capsule along with anti inflammatory tablet to my patients with similar complaints.
If there is no response, I will discuss with Orthopaedician.
It doesn't look like Strain.
If pus is collected, it has to be drained.
Please get a Ultrasound of the area for any Collection of pus.
Hope I answered your query. If you have any questions, I will still clarify.
Regards
