What Causes A Sudden Pain In Knee And Ankle?

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Mar 2016
Question: Hi
My left leg is hurting between knee and ankle. Pain came on suddenly a few hours after flying from XXXXXXX to XXXXXXX The pain is tingling/burning...and originally felt like a bruise but I do not recall bumping anything nor is there any bruising, swelling or discoloration. I have had a bad back on the lower left side. Am I okay to fly home tomorrow? Should I do anything? The pain runs from the knee to the ankle on the inside of my leg,

Brief Answer:
Possible vein thrombosis , in that case definitely Not ok to fly until proper management

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome to HCM.

If this is a sudden pain with no obvious trauma like you've already mentioned , then deep vein thrombosis may be considered.

It usually goes with swelling/bruising but not necessarily. In this case ,it is not recommended to take long flights since it may worsen situation.

To rule out thrombosis you should do Doppler ultrasound of the veno-arterial system. It's better if you can check into your local hospital where they'll run all other physical examination and investigations as well as appropriate management. If everything goes well then they'll also provide you fitness certificate to fly.

Till then - apply ice, keep leg elevated and rest. Please do not massage the leg.

Wish you good health.

My flight tomorrow is back to XXXXXXX ..roughly a 2 hr flight. Do you think it will be okay to see a doctor when I get home or would you suggest I reschedule the flight and get to a health provider that can run one of the tests you mentioned?

Thanks

Brief Answer:
it is ok

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

2 hour flight is not problematic, only more than 5 may be. It would be smart to put elastic bandage to compress veins in calf, but generally you can wait to see your doctor and then do tests I ve recommended.
