Posted on Tue, 14 Jun 2016
Question: this morning I noticed a sunken in area on my right gluteusmaximus cheek. It is right in the middle, the size of a golf ball. It does not hurt, and there is no drainage or sore. Just sunken in all of a sudden.

Brief Answer:
Can be due to muscle fascia or osteoporosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The sunken area in the muscle mass can be due to pulling in of the muscle due to gradual damage to the muscle fibers or related to osteoporosis. Since it is not painful any inflammation in the area is not likely.
The exact cause can be known only after investigations like MRI scan.

thank you Doctor. How could this be related to osteoporosis? Will it always look this way? I am hating having this hole in my rear-end.

Brief Answer:
Bone thinning can cause partial bone collapse.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Gradual bone thinning and fibrosis of the muscle can cause such a change. It is less likely to revert back to normal now. But it is best to confirm the diagnosis after a direct examination to be sure that it is nothing much harmful going on.
Hope my answer is helpful.

please see my question above regarding the caved-in area on my right buttock. Rather than describe it as in the muscle, I think more accurate is that it is in the fat tissue. I am not a fat person, either. I am 5ft. 7inches tall and weigh between 100 and 105 pounds. please reevaluate my question.

Brief Answer:
Fibrosis of fascia or muscle is more likely.

Detailed Answer:
The chances of retraction of fat are very less. It is the fibrosis of fascia or the muscle tissue that causes the cavitation or dimpling. Since you are not a fat person the chances of having a thick fat pad on the buttock is also less likely. However a direct examination is an integral part of proper diagnosis.
Regards.
