Question: Hi
I normally have fairly healthy bowel movements and in the last couple of weeks have been taking metamucil to help my digestive system. Last night when I went to the toilet I pooped what looked like an intestine with lumps or a long thin tube with lumps at regular intervals.. it looked rubbery. What was it?
Thanks

Brief Answer:
Hemorrhoids or Rectal Prolapse.

Detailed Answer:
Dr. Hanif warmly Welcomes you!

Thanks for consulting at my virtual clinic. I have carefully worked through your case, and I can realize your health worries. Being your physician, I assure you not to worry as I will take care all of your medical concerns.

The symptoms and the history suggest that you are having hemorrhoids. The lumps you are talking about are actually the dilated and tortuous veins. It is due to many reasons like portal hypertension.

Rectal prolapse is the second differential in which rectum comes out of the anus because the supports of the rectum become loose. In females it is more likely to happen as in pregnancy and delivery the uterus stretches upon and loosen the tight ligamental supports of the rectum. The lumps you are talking about are the rugal folds of the rectum walls.

You need to consult a General Surgeon right away. He will do the physical exam and Proctoscopy to rule out what it actually is. He will judge how advanced is the disease, and what is the degree of hemorrhoids or rectal prolapse. Different surgical approaches are available for correction and both the diseases have a good prognosis.

Hope it helps as I answered all of your questions. If you have more queries, feel free to ask me. If satisfied, please give it a five star rating and close the discussion. Have a wonderful time ahead.

Best Regards!
