What Causes Abdominal Pain, Nausea And Headache With History Of Brain Tumor?

Posted on Tue, 30 Jun 2015
Question: I have a son that had a brain tumor removed at age 3 . He is now 21, got a baclofen pump, a little over a year ago. and it has not helped as much with his hand spasms and walking as much as I had hoped. He has been getting abdominal pains, nausea, headaches, and symptoms of seizures (Twice) since Easter. He had started doing strenuous exercise a few months ago, and did great at CrossFit, (which was amazing because he has no use of left hand, it hurts a lot from spasms and he has pain all down left side from hemi paralysis)but he now is having so much pain in stomach and headaches, he does not feel like walking for the most part. He said he gets real down right away when he gets sick and very weak. We have an apt soon with neurologist but need some idea of what is going on and getting worse day by day. It is not constant but almost and getting more frequent in the last couple of weeks. What COULD be causing this?

Brief Answer:
Recurent brain tumor should be excluded.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

I need to ask some questions about your son's condition, first.

- when was the last imaging follow up of your son's and what were the results?

- where exactly was the brain tumor located ( which lobe )?

- what kind of tumor resulted by hystopathological examination?

- besides abdominal pain and upset stomach, is there any clouding of consciousness, arm or leg twitching?

Regarding to recent symptoms you described, in my opinion there are two things evaluate about your son's condition:

- recurrence of the brain tumor
- seizures probably related to brain scar tissue.

There is need for a brain MRI and an brain electrical function study (EEG) in order to properly evaluate/exclude these two options.

Hope this helps. I remain at your disposal for further questions and clarifications.
