Question: Hi doctor,
I am in the 7th week of pregnancy, 23rd sep being my last date of periods. My ultrasound today showed that there is no heartbeat. Im attaching my ultrasound report here. I will get another ultrasound in few days. Can you please look at the report and let me know if it is a matter of concern or this is common and heart beat will come at 8-9 week. Thanks in advance , XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
It is a matter of concern, but not panic, a repeat scan is needed

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

Thanks for writing to us about it.

I can certainly understand your concern over this matter.

Yes, it is true that sometimes heartbeat does not appear at 5 the week of pregnancy and we will go for repeat ultrasound to determine the heart beat.

If CRL length reaches 5 mm and the heart beat still absent, then chances of missed abortion are there (in your case it is 2.8mm).

In your report it is stated that your sac shape is abnormal and it is larger in diameter, so if sac diameter is more than 12 mm and yolk sac does not appear, then the possibility of missed abortion is there. (In your report gestational sac diameter is not observed).

As your CRL is less than 5 mm you should proceed for a repeat scan in 7 days to see the heart beat. It will hopefully be seen at that time.

Hope it is useful, feel free to ask more.

Good luck.
Regards
