What Causes An Increase In Amniotic Fluid At 37 Weeks Of Gestation?
Question: I am 36 weeks. My placenta maturity measures grade 3 in todays ultrasound with baby gestational weight 2500 gms and heartbeat of 138 bpm. My AFI is 18. Please advise is there anything to worry about. As my gynac advices a preterm induced labour at 37 weeks.
Brief Answer:
no need of labour induction at 37 weeks
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. Your ultrasound is normal for 36 weeks of gestation, apart from the fact that the amount of fluid around the foetus is on the higher range, though has not exceeded the limit.
There is no reason for induction of labour at 37 weeks until there is any other history of any other illness like pre eclampsia.
Hope you found the answer helpful. Please do get back for further queries.
Wishing you good health.

Maam my level 2 ultrasound was normal and my AFI was also 12 till 30 weeks. BP has been constant 120/70 throughout. At 31 weeks i had to undergo a very stressfull travel of 32 hours non stop by road and at my 35 weeks ultra the AFI was 18. But the radiologist said the baby is growing well. Is a grade 3 placenta to worry about at 36 weeks? I am a complete vegetarian. Take no alcohol sugar caffeine nothing.
Brief Answer:
gestational diabetes?
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX thanks for responding. Grade 3 placenta is completely normal at 36 weeks of pregnancy. However, the fluid around the fetus is on a higher range. Do you have a family history of diabetes? Or ever got your glucose challenge test or glucose tolerance test in this pregnancy?
Gestational diabetes is a major cause of increased AFI and should be detected and managed at the earliest.
Other causes are congenital anomalies, fetal infection which are mostly ruled out in level2 ultrasound.
Please do get back to me with the information.
