What Causes Back Pain?
You can wait.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have studied your case with diligence.
As your MRI says only torned disc without rupture or herniation then you can wait.
Your symptoms may relieve with exercises and back care.
Medication like methylcobalamine along with Aleve will help you.
You may consult physiotherapist for guidance. He may start TENS, or ultrasound which is helpful in your case.
You may need to take diet rich in calcium and vitamin D
I will advise to check your vit B12 and vit D3 level.
Some exercises which can be done
Spine extension exercises, lying on your stomach flat lift leg 6 inches from ground, do it for other leg.
Now lift both hand and leg simultaneously, 6 inch off the ground and stay
Position for around 10 breathes. Core stabilizing spine exercises will help.

Also, if the pain does not subside, at what point should I head back to the doctor? 2 months? ...6 months? ...a year? I ask this because it has been about 5 months since the initial injury and there seems to be little improvement.
I did the spine extension exercises yesterday and it seems rather promising. Thanks for your assistance. It is much appreciated.
Physiotherapy like IFT and TENS.
Detailed Answer:
Hello
You may have good relief with physiotherapy like IFT [Interferential therapy] and TENS[Transcutaneous electrostimulation] along with ultrasound.
So if possible you can start that.
You can wait for a month more and then you may consult your doctor.
