Question: Woke up 2 days ago hearing nothing with my left ear but an annoying beep. A local doctor checked me up and said it was a viral infection in the nerve behind my ear drums, the doctor put me on a 2 week Cortison program starting 20mg 3 times a day the first week the 5 mg 2 times a day the second week. I would like to hear a second opinion and will this beep ever go away and will I be able to hear again using this ear. There is no was blockage in the ear canal he said.

Brief Answer:
vestibular neuronitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for your query.
In my opinion, sudden onset of beep or ringing sensation in the ear with hearing loss can be because of many reasons, like viral infection of the hearing nerve, inner ear disease like meneires disease, acoustic trauma, oto toxicity because of some drugs, middle ear infection, Vascular lesions of the brain, infarct to the hearingnerve etc.
Even simple wax in the external ear can cause this.
But as your doctor has examined you and said that your canal is not blocked, so chances of wax is ruled out.
Other middle ear and inner ear conditions are diagnosed only by clinical examination.
As your doctor has examined you and diagnosed with viral neuronitis, treated with steroids for 2 weeks, continue his treatment.
If I were your treating doctor, I would have examined you and confirmed my diagnosis , then i would prescribed oral steroids for 2 weeks+ betahistine tablets+ ginkobiloba tab 40 mg for 3 to 6 weeks+multivitamin tablets.
I would have got audiometry test done to know about the inner ear status.
If tinnitus does not improve with 6 weeks of oral medicines, then I would suggest to go for intra tympanic steroid injection, weekly once for 4 weeks, unless other causes of tinnitus are ruled out.
I would advise you to continue medication as prescribed by your doctor, if symptoms persists, then you can consult with your doctor and discuss my view with him.
You tinnitus will reduce and you will be able to hear well in that ear. Do not worry. But it takes some time.
Hope my answers have helped you pleased to help you further. Thanks.

Dear Dr. Deepashree
Thank you for your fast reply that helped me a lot. I have never met or talked to a vestibular neuronitis before so allow me to used the opportunity and get some professional advise from you. Attached to this conversation you will find a recent blood test, the hearing test the doctor made me do to identify my problem after checking me up, the medication he put me on and some supplements I usually take daily.
1-does any of the supplements contradict with my medication?
2-does any of these supplements cause any harm to my nerves or do they trigger anything?
3- you advised me to take multivitamin, is the Opt-men twice a day enough?
4- does working out or lifting weights cause any harm during my medication?
5- does the weigh protien cause any harm or makes the beeping noise louder?
6-some family doctor advised me to take some B12 shots at the pharmacy, should I?
7-looking at all that, is there any extra advice you could give me to fix my issue or prevent similar issues to happen?
Thank you for your valuable time and waiting for you reply.

Brief Answer:
Hello.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for your follow up query.
I went through your medication and reports.
As per the audiometry report ,you have sudden sensorineural hearing loss with dip at 4 kHz.
Acoustic trauma orProlonged use of XXXXXXX ear phones, blast injury, oto toxicity due to drugs are the cause for this.
Your middle ear is fine. No conductive loss . Normal middle ear pressure seen.
The medication you are taking are correct. Continue it.
1. No medication is contradicted
2. None of the medication weaken your hearing nerve
3. Optomen tablet is enough as a multivitamin supplement.
4.you can do exercise and lift weight during treatment.
5. You can take weigh protein. No harm.
6.i also would advise to take vit b 12 injections weekly once for 6 weeks as it may strength en the nerve.
I would add on a betahistine tablet 16 to 24 mg to increase the micro blood circulation to the nerve.
Hope my answers have helped you. Thanks.
