What Causes Black Stool In Infants?

Posted on Thu, 12 Nov 2015
Question: Hello sir,
My wife gave birth(vaginal delivery) to a baby girl 8 days before (last thursday). Both mother and baby are doing well. After two hours of birth my baby girl had a bowel movement once with black ,coloured, greesy poo. Next day, after the birth she had another bowel movement with green coloured poo. After that, until today she never had any bowel movements. She undergoes breastfeeding well with good latching and almost 8 to 10 times a day. she urinates 8 times per day approximately. But her bowel movement is still due for the past 1 week.
Is this fine to wait for another week for the bowel movement ?
thanks

Brief Answer:
Do not worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to the HCM

I completely understand your concerns but don't worry. Newborns are prone to such variations in frequency of poops. Also, the colour and consistency of poops changes quite often. If your baby is feeding well, urinating well, active and alert with no abdominal distension, then there is no need to worry. As it's a week since last bowel movement, so I would recommend you to use
1/3rd glycerin suppository for stimulating bowel movement.

In case, she has distended abdomen and vomiting episodes then visit a pediatrician for proper clinical examination before using glycerin suppository.

Hopefully this will help you. I would be happy to help you in any further questions.
Take care
