What Causes Black Stool While On Gabapentin, Benazepril And Methylphenidate?
Question: lately have been noticing dark tar like stool sticking to toilet bowl. List of meds in a MS Word file was an invalid format. Gabapentin 300mg QID, Benazepril 40MG 1/day, Glimepride 2 MG/day, Methylphenidate 20MG BID, Atorvastating 40MG/day, Aspirin 81MG 1/day
Brief Answer:
It could be due to minor bleed.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Dark tar like stool could be due to minor bleed in the upper Gastrointestinal tract.
If the bleeding is from Rectum or Anal canal, it will be bright red in color.
If the bleeding is in the upper Gastrointestinal tract, blood will undergo changes and will come as dark tarry stool.
Upper GI endoscopy should be done .
It could be due to Aspirin.
I'd advice a Proton pump inhibitor like RABEPRAZOLE 20mg twice daily in empty stomach after stopping Aspirin.
Please consult your doctor, get examined clinically and proceed accordingly.
Nothing to worry.
Hope I answered your query. If you have any questions, I will clarify further.
Wish you good health.
Regards
