What Causes Bleeding During 7 Weeks Of Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Mon, 7 Dec 2015
Question: I'am currently 7weeks & 6 days pregnant. I went for my first ultrasound yesterday the baby was said to be measuring perfect at 7w5d and had a heartbeat of 132bpm, the ultrasound tech congratulated me and told me that the doctor would let me know when to schedule my next appointment so a few minutes later when I met with the obgyn she told me that after looking at the ultrasound the baby is alive and has a heartbeat but that her and the ultrasound tech noticed blood around the baby, she told me that there was a chance that I may lose the baby or I may not and advised me to stay on pelvic rest for a week and told me that she would have to schedule for my next appointment sooner so in a week I would have to come back for another ultrasound. When I came home I tried looking online for answers about some of my questions related to the issue I'm having but the only thing I'm finding similar to my condition is something called "subchorionic hematoma" but while my obgyn was speaking to me she never mentioned this name and from reading the description of what subchorionic hematoma is it says that one of the symptoms is bledding or spotting but I have yet to have either one of those signs, and nothing is mentioned about the chance of losing the baby like my obgyn said so I'm not sure if I have the same condition or if somethings more severe than subchorionic hematoma if you can please help thank you!

Brief Answer:
Most small bleeding at 7 weeks will resolve

Detailed Answer:
Hi xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. The finding of a bleed in early pregnancy between the chorionic membrane and wall of uterus is common and most of the time it gets reabsorbed and the pregnancy continues till term. It might happen in the first and second trimester. Most patients have symptoms like vaginal bleeding but in some like you there is no symptoms. Please watch closely for any bleeding and consult your doctor.

2. If you are having pregnancy of 7 weeks and 6 days then it is less dangerous. Such a finding is more troublesome if pregnancy is between 10 to 20 weeks since there is risk of stripping of placenta. This is less likely to happen in you.

3. If it is a small hematoma then it will regress in size soon and probably that is the reason your doctor did not mention it to you. I see many of these regularly and they resolve in few days to weeks. It is important to follow up in a week to make sure that the size of bleed is not increasing.

The above reply is keeping in mind the possibility of a subchorionic bleed. If possible please upload your report and pictures so that I can discuss accurately about your condition. Rarely such bleed can be the cause for a miscarriage. However since your doctor has not told you any thing therefore I feel it is a small bleed and not a serious problem.

Hope your query is answered.

Brief Answer:
Keep yourself free from physical and mental stress

Detailed Answer:
Hi xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

1. There is no need to worry too much and the bleed is relatively a small one. However a follow up scan is important.

2. Bed rest does not mean that you do not get out of bed. Always change your relaxing position every two hours and this is important. You can continue doing light activities at home without putting yourself in stress and have adequate rest and breaks. Avoid carrying more than 3 kg of weight.

3. Please stay mentally cheerful about your pregnancy and I am sure things are going to get back to normal quickly.

Hope your query is answered.

Thank you, looking at the ultrasound are you able to tell whether the blood is above the fetus or below or behind, etc? And if it looks like a lot of blood or a little

Brief Answer:
It is a small one and located outside the sac

Detailed Answer:
Hi xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

1. The bleeding is basically around the sac containing the fetus, the dark area on one side of the sac.

2. It is a small one, I have mentioned that in my earlier reply. Please do not worry too much about it because more stress can be harmful.

3. About 1 in 4 women have slight bleeding in early pregnancy and you do not have any symptoms. Therefore your situation is definitely better but please report any vaginal bleeding immediately to your doctor.

Hope your query is answered.

Brief Answer:
There is a worry about the scan report

Detailed Answer:
Hi xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

1. Your report mentions that the bleed can be considered as trace and no increase in the bleed in noted. However the transvaginal scan shows that the yolk sac is not clearly seen. The yolk sac provides nutrition to the fetus at this time and not finding a clear yolk sac with septations in the gestational sac can mean that things are delicate at the moment. There is a significant risk of miscarriage from the report details which you have shared.

2. Many women have spotting in early pregnancy and then continue to have a normal delivery. The non visualization of the yolk sac clearly and septations in gestational sac worry me.

3. I hope that the situation gets normal for you in the next scan. Hoping for the best.

Hope your query is answered.
Please do write back if you have any doubts.
