What Causes Blood In Phlegm While Coughing?
Question: This morning I work up and coughed and there was some bright blood in my phlegm. I had a drop up my nose, but very little. I have made myself cough a few more times and found some more blood, although not as bright and a bit scatters with in the phlegm. The phlegm itself is very clear, not yellow or green. Now, I worked in my yard yesterday for about 8 hours and this included a lot of sweeping and power washing. Is it possible that i irritated something and it is causing me to have some blood within my mucus? I have no other symptoms except a dry nose and my throat is a little dry.
Brief Answer:
due to inflammation of airways

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic
Blood can be present in phlegm as a result of any inflammatory process.
This would include allergies, infection or more serious conditions which are far less likely.
The sweeping, washing could provoke an allergic/inflammatory response with irritation of the airways- dry nose and throat.
Once the surface of these airways are inflamed/irritated then blood can be seen.
It should decrease with avoidance of any allergens as much as possible (dust, pollen) or you can use oral antihistamines and topical steroid nasal sprays (nasonex, nasocort, flonase) to decrease the symptoms sooner.
