What Causes Bloody Mucus In Nose While Treating RSV?
Question: My 22month old was diagnosed with RSV. We have been doing everything the Dr prescribed and taking all precautions. I'm concerned because everytime I suck mucus out of her nose, it's bloody. Is that normal for RSV?
Brief Answer:
This is not normal in RSV
Detailed Answer:
Hi...this symptom of blood stained discharge which you describe is not normal in RSV.
This could occur by the suctioning effect of pressure which can injure smallest of small capillaries in the mucous membrane if the nose.
If the mucus is admixed with blood, then I suggest you instill saline nasal drops - 1 drop into each nostril before doing the nasal suctioning.
If it's XXXXXXX blood, then seek medical attention.
What's more important than the bloody nasal discharge is the respiratory pattern and distress of the kid during RSV infection.
