Question: My wife is complaining of extream chills but she is clammy. She is 69 and has copd and takes a large amount of medicines. Any clue ? appreciated.

Chills with clammy skin in elderly can be an absolutely normal finding. Elderly people do have lower basal body temperature more frequently as compared to healthy adults.
Another cause might be a recent viral infection or COPD which your wife might have suffered in the recent past. This can be the result of weakness arising out of such an infection.
Chills and a very low body temp can indicate an under-active thyroid - this is the gland that regulates our metabolism.You need to get her thyroid levels checked.
Another common reason is environmental factors, such as too many covers or heavy pajamas
