Posted on Mon, 5 Jan 2015
Question: My husband came home from playing golf this p.m. and shortly after started to ache allover, headache and hot. I checked temp a couple of hours ago and it was just under 101. Now it is 102. I game him some aspirin and a cool cloth for his forehead and rechecked his temp which is now 102. He is normally in great health and 69 yrs old.

Brief Answer:
Management of fever is crucial

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

From the history you have provided it looks like your husband is suffering from an infection, most likely to be a bacterial infection as the temperature is very high. Here are my suggestions to you

1. Tab acetaminophen is a better drug than aspirin to bring down the temperature; it can be taken three times daily.
2. Continue tepid sponging; keep cold and wet towels in the armpits and forehead
3. Avoid cold food and beverages, avoid oily and spicy food. The food should be bland and warm
4. If the fever does not subside even after a day, I strongly recommend broad spectrum antibiotics like amox with clavulunate twice daily for 5 days. Visit a GP for blood tests, further evaluation of fever and to start antibiotics.

I hope I was of help, I wish your husband a speedy recovery. Please get back to me for any clarification
