What Causes Burning Sensation And Numbness On Foot?

default
Posted on Wed, 5 Nov 2014
Question: I have a no displaced fracture in the 4th metatarsal on my left foot. This happened on 7-1-14. It was not officially diagnosed until mid September when the pain finally became unbearable. I was placed in a walking boot on October 7. Since that time I have a horrible burning sensation in my foot at the point of the break and numbness has now spread to almost my entire foot. Is this normal or could there be something serious?

Brief Answer:
Can be normal.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The burning sensation and numbness that is more intense now can be due to a nerve injury or compression. It can get aggravated by using a boot. You can remove the walking boot at night while resting and see if the sensation improves. Usually the numbness improves in a few weeks.
In case the burning is intense and is associated with a muscle weakness then it is worrisome and you need to consult your orthopedician for a physical examination.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.

I have been taking the boot off at night and have had it off most of the day. The numbness and burning have been at its worst so far today. And I do have weakness in this foot. It's an odd feeling when I stand or walk without the boot because I tend to stumble almost

Brief Answer:
It is not normal.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
If there is an associated muscle weakness then it is not normal and needs attention. Do consult your orthopedician to check for nerve compression.
