What Causes Burning Sensation From Buttocks To Back Of Knee?
Question: I am having serious burning from the bottom of my buttock to the back of my knee. Is there anything I can do here at home to lessen this burning?

Burning pain which is referred from buttock to back of thigh and knee can result commonly from-
1)L5-S1 radiculopathy(due to disc herniation or degenerative spine disease)
2)sciatic neuropathy or sciatic nerve injury
3)Lumbosacral plexopathy( idiopathic,traumatic,diabetes are common causes)
4)Gluteal abscess
If you would have presented to me as an outpatient,I would have asked you following questions before arriving at a conclusion-
1)Is the burning sensation present on left,right or both sides?
2)For how long you are having it?
3)Any history of a fall or trauma,related to this?
4)Does the burning increase on walking and decrease on rest?
5)Does the burning sensation decrease on bending forwards?
6)Did this start after a gluteal injection?
7)Are you having gluteal tenderness?
8)Do you have diabetes or some other disease?
9)Do you take alcohol?
Please follow-up with the above details so that I can diagnose the cause and hence guide you regarding treatment.

Burning sensation is on both sides. I have had these symptoms for about 8 days. Have not fallen or anything accident. The burning is worse when I am sitting and is not to bad when I wake in the mornings. Does seem to be a little less when I bend forward. I am not diabetic and I do not drink alcohol at all. I am not having literal tenderness or have I had any injections. Is there anything that I can do at home to lessen this burning sensation or do I need to see a doctor?

After going through your medical history, I must say it is difficult to point out a definite diagnosis just on the basis of clinical history. 'Radiculopathy' still remains a differential diagnosis, though sciatic neuropathy, plexopathy and gluteal abscess are virtually ruled out.
I advise you to undergo a dedicated physical examination by a neurologist, so that he can examine your reflexes and sensations, thus facilitating in making the diagnosis. He may ask you to undergo a MRI lumbosacral spine.
Meanwhile, please take some good antineuralgics like 'amitriptyline' and 'methylcobalamin' tablets, these will likely improve your symptoms. PLEASE TAKE MEDICINES UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF A PHYSICIAN.
