What Causes Burning While Urinating And Swelling Of Lymph Nodes After Intercourse?

Posted on Mon, 8 Dec 2014
Question: I am a 46 y/o female.....In a monogamous relationship for 5 months. 1 week ago I had burning with urination 1 day after intercourse and initially no other symptoms but after about 3 days the burning spread to the outside when I wiped and my lymph nodes in my groin area swelled. After about 5 days, the burning sensation started moving down my legs. There are no lesions and no pain in my stomach or back. I assumed I had a UTI and treated with cranberry juice and extra water. After 1 week the symptoms are almost gone. Would a UTI cause the external burning and lymph nodes to swell or is it possibly another diagnosis? Since the symptoms are almost gone is there any need to see a doctor at this point or am I in the clear now?

Brief Answer:
It was possibly urinary tract infection...explained

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for contacting healthcaremagic.

Well you suffered from urinary tract infection, yes, as the most common symptom being burning while urination. If not treated then the infection may spread to lymph nodes and can cause lymph node swelling.

As the symptoms are gone now by alkalinizing cranberry juice and extra water, the diagnosis remains UTI mostly and the body has itself fought with its own innate immune mechanism with the infection to relieve you of the lymph node swellings. Though it is unusual for lymph nodes to swell and get treated without antibiotics but if the symptoms are no more existent then we have to give it to the immunity.

To allay the doubt further, I suggest you to get a urine culture and urine routine microscopy test to rule out asymptomatic bacteruria which may be persistent. You may follow up with reports with me at :-

Thank you so much for your quick response. My symptoms are almost gone. My lymph nodes are no longer swollen but are tender. The main nuisance right now is an external burning sensation that has traveled from where I wipe to down my legs and on my butt. Could the untreated uti and swollen lymph nodes cause this type of burning sensation? Someone suggested that it could be an std like gonnarhea or herpes. But when looking at the symptoms I do not have a vaginal discharge, lesions, or flu like symptoms and I have been in a monogamous relationship for 6 months with no concern of unfaithfulness and before that I was married for 24 years.

Brief Answer:
It is like ly to be UTI , not herpes or gonorrhoea

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the follow up.

It is unlikely to be gonorrhoea as it would be accompanied by a vaginal discharge in that case and in herpes zoster it has to be a unilateral presentation and only on one side and not on both buttocks or thighs and also there would be clear fluid filled blebs.

So in either case it is not any one of them .
Though burning in thighs is an unusual presentation for UTI but it is better to get a urine routine microscopy and urine culture done to rule out bacteriuria.

Kindly review with reports.
