Brief Answer:
WAIT FOR 2 CYCLES BEFORE EVALUATION

Detailed Answer:
Hello
THanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Once in a while, a period might be earlier or later than normal, do not worry.
Also, there are certain factors that can precipitate it - stress, anxiety, unaccustomed exercise, weight changes, travelling, late nights, excessive smoking or drinking , erratic eating or sleeping habits etc.
When have you taken the pregnancy test, on what day of your cycle ?
If pregnancy is reasonably ruled out , stop worrying.
Wait for a couple of cycles more.
IF the irregularity and spotting persists, you should seek a Gynecological opinion.
THis would involve an internal exam, a pelvic ultrasound scan, a Pap smear and hormonal assay ( FSH, LH, TSH, Prolactin, OGTT, DHEAS, Free testosterone ).
It would highlight any potential causes such as fibroids, polyps, cervical lesions, ovarian cysts etc.
All the best

Ok thanks, I took pregnancy test about a week after I had late period, and I have XXXXXXX working a lot shifts & late night shifts. Just waiting to see if I get my period in about 2 weeks time. Also another question now that my cycle has changed do I ovulate at a later date now?

Thanks again.

Brief Answer:
YES, OVULATION WOULD BE LATE ACCORDINGLY

Detailed Answer:
Then the test is pretty much reliable, it was not taken too early.
I think it is just a mild hormonal disturbance due to stress and late nights.
Wait and see for a couple of cycles more.
With irregular cycles and spotting , ovulation too is pretty much unpredictable.
Generally ovulation happens 14 days after your period, so you can have a rough estimate.
Take care.
