What Causes Chills And Fever Post Treatment For Chicken Pox?

Question: My son is 17 years old and last week he got cured from chicken pox(he had chicken pox with high fever). Chicken pox subsided and now after one week again he is getting chills with fever. He has 102 fever yesterday and we gave him dolo 650 and took him to doctor. Doctor asked us to get tests done the next day if there is fever. Today night again he got chills. shivering and we gave dolo 650, what should we do now? what should we specifically do for chills and shivering, his temparature is 100 degrees F

he is ashthmatic and he has no wheeze but blocked nose and rashes due to humid weather

Hi

I have gone through your query. Your son's problem can be due to secondary bacterial infection. Blood and urine routine examination should be done get signs of that. In case of such infection antibiotic therapy will be required. Even allergic episodes can gives fever. Corticosteroids will be helpful in such case.

Taking mefenamic acid tablet or ibuprofen along with paracetamol will be helpful for fever and shivering. But if you are getting fever are chills at night peripheral smear should be carried out to rule out conditions like malaria. Blood for peripheral smear should be taken at the time of high fever.

Thank you very much Doctor, just a final doubt. Can Ibuprofen be given when the fever is 100 and he is shivering and having chills at that time.

Ibuprofen is contraindicated in case of hemorrhagic fevers. Blood routine including platelet count will be helpful to rule out that. Platelet count will show a decreasing tendency in such case. In other cases ibuprofen is helpful.

More fluid should be given also. This helps in replenishing fluid loss and decrease in temperature.
