What Causes Chills And Shivering?

default
Posted on Tue, 4 Oct 2016
Question: hello, I was awakened shaking and freezing cold. It was in the 80's today but the nights cool off. I had a bedspread and a comforter over me and I was still shaking and freezing I think my bp is a little high. I'm taking two different meds for the blood pressure. I am over weight, just turned 84 yrs,. live independently and get around quite well with a cane, walker etc. when needed. I have arthritis [worse in my knee] which is why I use the "tools". I was told that I had Afib in the hospital 4 years ago-but no one ever told me enough about it for me to ever recognize it.

Brief Answer:
Explained

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome

I appreciate your concern

Shivering and feeling of cold is commonly related to fever associated with an infection. General physical and systemic exam should help identify the focus of infection and be treated accordingly with antibiotics if needed.

In Atrial fibrillation the heart's two upper chambers beat irregularly — out of sync with the two lower chambers often precipitating in palpitations and shortness of breath.

Atrial fibrillation requires either a rate or rhythm control. Anticoagulation to prevent clot related complications is also required.

The blood pressure can be checked and if uncontrolled then the antihypertensive medications can be optimized accordingly.

wishing you best of health

Thanks

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.

The pulse is high. A rate of 60 should be the target. Beta blockers like atenolol or bisoprolol should be added to the medication in this regard.

Thanks
