What Causes Chills, Fatigue And Excessive Sleepiness?

default
Posted on Mon, 8 May 2017
Question: My 71 year old husband has done the unusual, he has gone to bed in the middle of the day with complaints of chills. He didn't even want to eat breakfast which is unusual for this 300 pound man. Can this be a sign of something more serious?

Brief Answer:
Considerations.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for the query.

The chills and fatigue with a tendency to want to sleep could be a sign of infection such as the flu or possibly a bacterial infection.

If he has any discomfort with urination, cough, abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting then he should be seen in a local ER as soon as possible.

Otherwise, I would recommend supportive care - good hydration and plenty of rest for the time being.

If his symptoms are worse or not any better in 24 hours would recommend you bring him to the hospital for an evaluation.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Sincerely,

Dr Galamaga
