Brief Answer:
It is bronchitis

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Thank you for posting your question on Health Care Magic.
By the description of your symptoms and your smoking history the severe cough could either be bronchitis which is swelling of your respiratory tract or COPD which is a complication of bronchitis leading to chronic airway obstruction.
Management wise the first thing I would recommend is to stop smoking ,however the damage done cannot be reversed but can be managed symptomatically.
I would you to get an x ray of your chest along with a Pulmonary function test and forward it to me.
Meanwhile you can start using Albuterol inhaler 2 puffs twice a day it will help your cough.
Please discontinue your cough syrup it will not help you in anyway
Hope this helps
Best wishes
