Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for asking at HCM.
I carefully read your question and understand your concern.

There are several causes of bowel movement changes and diarrhea. The factors that are very important are the age of the patient and for how long the diarrhea has been there. The associated symptoms also give a lot of information on the possible causes.
In your case the change in the bowel movements seems to be longer than expected for a routine viral infection of the bowel. Other than viral infections, diarrhea can be caused by food intolerance like lactose intolerance that is very common with aging. Food allergies might also be the cause.
In some patients parasites might cause diarrhea that lasts for weeks to months.
More rare causes like bowel tumors might be a cause of diarrhea also.
To conclude I would recommend you to:

1. first of all make sure you take enough fluids and electrolytes to substitute the losses. ORS (oral re-hydration solutions) are the best ones. Having enough fluids in the diet is important also.
2. avoid milk for a week or two and see if your diarrhea improves.
3. take some enterogermins which are solutions that substitute the normal bowel flora and might be helpful in diarrhea.
4. do not use medications for diarrhea without the recommendation of a doctor, for example do not take loperamide without a doctor recommending it as it might have many side effects.
5. you might have a stool test for ova and parasites.
6. Blood tests for CBC and ERS might be helpful.
7. stool test for occult blood (FOBT) helps identify if there is blood in your stools.
8. have a colonoscopy done. Normally every patient 55- 75 years of age should have a colonoscopy done routinely to rule out bowel mass.
9. Finally: it is not recommended to have more than 2-3 drinks of alcohol a day which means not more than 14-21 standard glasses of wine a week. To b e safe I would say do not take more than 2 standard wine glasses of wine a day.

I hope this is helpful and answers to your questions.

Kind regards

Dr Antoneta Zotaj
