What Causes Cold Chills And Tiredness?
Question: Hello doctor, I'm a heavy set female, age 51, and yesterday around noon I was at work and I started getting this cold chills without fever. I blamed it on the Air conditioning but they always have the air condition at 74 all the time and I never had this problem. My chills lasted for about 30 minutes then they went away. After work I went home and everything was fine until around time to go to bed around 10pm, I started to have the same cold chills as earlier in the day. I have to admit that I did lower the air conditioning since I have family over. And, they also lasted about 30 minutes. This morning I got up and I feel like soar & tired, without no chills and no fever.
Brief Answer:
Chills
Detailed Answer:
I am sorry to learn about your symptoms.
There are various causes of chills.
I suggest getting your thyroid checked by doing a simple blood test called TSH and Free T4. This does not require any fasting. Since you will be giving a blood sample anyway, I recommend doing routine liver and kidney tests along with a 'Plasma Fractionated metanephrines' level to rule out a rare condition called pheochromocytoma that can cause chill like reactions.
Menopause can result in flashes but your complaints are of cold and chills I see. Do you still get your monthly menstrual cycles?
I suggest the following blood tests in summary:
CBC
CMP
TSH
FREE T4
PLASMA FRACTIONATED METANEPHRINES
Chills

Thank you for you quick response.
In answer to your question yes I still have my menstrual cycles. All my life my menstrual cycles always last 3 days normal regular bleeding. But in the past 4 & 5 years they have been too heavy bleeding the first day, then the rest of days it's not too heavy but now they last 5 days I also 2 months I did not have a Menstrual during the year.
This condition Pheochromocytoma is it something bad, not that I'm admitting I have it but just asking.

Brief Answer:
Follow up
Detailed Answer:
You are clearly peri-menopausal where such menstrual disturbances are not uncommon but I still suggest you see a gynecologist as it is not my area of expertise.
Pheochromocytoma is usually benign, so from that perspective it is not bad. However it can cause life threatening problems and therefore it is important to rule out
