Question: Hello,

I have constant pain in my right side and was asked by the Gastroentologist to do HIDA scan. The ejection fraction is 46% so was told that is normal rate. Can you please advise if there is any chance this fraction can go up to near 90%.

Brief Answer:
Early signs of heart failure. Situation can improve.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. A hepatobiliary (HIDA) scan is an imaging procedure used to diagnose problems of the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts. This is unrelated to an echocardiography which can let you know the ejection fraction of the heart. The ejection fraction refers to the amount, or percentage, of blood that is pumped (or ejected) out of the ventricles with each contraction. 50-75% ejection fraction indicates that the heart's pumping ability is normal. Yours is slightly less and therefore it is an early sign of heart failure. However, the ejection fraction can be improved (although not perhaps as high as 90%). You need to:
* Limit Salt (sodium) to 2,000 mg a day.
* Manage Your Fluids – With a low EF, blood can back up in your lungs and force fluid into the breathing spaces. Your doctor will recommend the amount of fluids you should have daily.
* Exercise Regularly for at least 30 minutes a day of activity, even if that activity is walking. Exercise can help strengthen your heart and improve how well it pumps blood to the rest of the body.

Let me know if I could help further.

Hello,

Thank you very much for the response. But can I also have an opinion from Gastroentologist. This HIDA scan test was ordered by my Gastroentologist so wanted to get their opinion. My current gall bladder ejection fraction is 46%, will that go up to reach higher 70% or 90% ever. I feel heaviness on my right side, I was told that is due to my gall bladder so will that heaviness go away so that I can go back to my normal life.

Please advise me on this, as this is bothering me and I don't want to do surgery.

Brief Answer:
Gall bladder ejection fraction can be improved

Detailed Answer:
Unfortunately on this platform you can get only response from only one doctor per thread. Moreover, opinion from a gastroenterologist would require you to go for a higher priced specialist question.

Thanks for clarifying that you are talking about gall bladder ejection fraction. When the gallbladder empties poorly, the diagnosis of biliary dyskinesia, defined as a gallbladder ejection fraction less than 35%, is made, and cholecystectomy can be considered. Yours is therefore not dyskinetic. The gall bladder ejection fraction can be brought up. You need to take whole grains and plenty of green leafy vegetables and fruits. You need to back it up with regular exercise. That will help in bringing up the gall bladder ejection fraction.
