What Causes Constant Pressure, Numbness And Tingling Feeling In Perineum?

default
Posted on Mon, 12 Jan 2015
Question: My son, info listed below, has daily pressure, numbness and tingling, no pain, in his perineum. He has odd sensations on his penis: like a flicking or a twitch. and a squishy feeling that engulfs the whole penis. I am a RN. These symptoms of his, have been longstanding since the surgery. They cause him anxiety and are very distracting. He saw a urologist today, and was given antibiotics. He does not have a fever. The doctor told him that the symptoms were due to his mental illness. He is very upset. Can you advise?

Brief Answer:
Neuropathic pain medications may help.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your son's symptoms and agree that they could be very upsetting and disturbing.

It is difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of his symptoms, however, the symptoms appear to be neuropathic in nature. At the same time, investigations such as MRI spine/pelvis and nerve conduction studies are likely to come out normal.

Underlying psychiatric illness can exacerbate these symptoms.

In my opinion, it would be worthwhile giving a trial of neuropathic pain medications. Common medicines that could help him are pregabalin, gabapentin or duloxetine capsules.

I hope my reply has helped you.

I would be pleased to answer, if you have any follow up queries or if you require any further information.

Thank you for your response. My son is quick to point out that he doesn't have any pain.

My thought is that this is something that he is going to have to live with.

Can you suggest any alternative methods of coping with these symptoms?

Brief Answer:
I meant neuropathic symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

Thank you for clarifying that there is no pain. I meant the same, however, the correct term would be neuropathic symptoms. Symptoms such as pressure, tingling, twitching sensations, etc can be described as neuropathic symptoms (presumed to be due to nerve injury).

Medications, as I suggested above, would help in relieving these symptoms.

In addition, for anxiety, he may also take clonazepam tablets.

Best wishes,

Dr Sudhir Kumar MD DM (Neurology)
