What Causes Constant Upper Abdominal Pain And Hiatal Hernia?
I have chronic low Iron my last test it was 11. I have had both upper and lower scope about a year ago and they showed nothing but the hernia and the Doctors said they thought I was bleeding from the hernia and that was causing my low iron (at that time it was 4.) I am presently taking 700mg of iron a day now to bring my level up..should they be looking for anything else?
Investigations- consult Hematologist and review UGI Endoscopy
Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Read and understood your history of constant pain in upper abdomen, hiatal hernia, upper and lower scope, no definite cause found for the low iron which was 4 and now is 11, taking 700 mg of iron per day, taking generic Privosec (? prilosec-Omeprazole).
Wants to know the reason.
I would like to see the exact reports if you can please post them as attachment and the iron preparation you are taking.
I hope your also taking Folic acid and multivitamins.
The Low Iron count can be searched at 3 levels.
1. Intake: Taking foods which is low in Iron contents.
2. Absorption from intestine: any intestinal condition causing reduced absorption of Iron and other elements and vitamins
3. Problems with assimilation: conversion of iron into hemoglobin.
All the investigations related to the tree points needs to be investigated well.
For this the Hematologist and the Dietitian are the best persons you can get the opinion and treatment with.
Hiatus Hernia can not have so much bleeding that can cause so much low Iron.
For pain in abdomen:
The pain is constant and can be due to gastritis or so.
Oral iron can cause gastritis.
I would advise you to have review Upper GI Endoscopy to evaluate for hiatus hernia, gastritis or so.
Ultrasonography of the abdomen and if required CT scan or MRI to see for the liver, gall bladder, pancreas and so on.
Gastroenterologist would also do a clinical evaluation and physical examination to see for or to rule out the probable cause of constant pain in upper abdomen.
I hope this answer helps you. Please feel free to ask for further relevant queries or if you feel that there is a gap-of-communication.
