What Causes Cough And Sore Throat After Choking On Some Food?

Question: My grandmother just died of aspiration pneumonia. Last night at dinner, I think some of my broccoli went down the wrong tube. I have been coughing, developed a sore throat and am having a hard time clearing my throat since then. is it necessary to seek medical attention at this point? If it was just once, is it still dangerous? Wondering if it will eventually dissolve on it it's own.

I am very sorry to know about the loss of your grandma. It was indeed very unfortunate.

With the history you have described, I do not think so you are having any aspiration related problem. It could be a mild upper respiratory tract infection and I doubt any serious problem. Do not worry! With the appropriate measures, the infection can be taken care of.

My suggestions to you are:
1. Drink plenty of warm water
2. Do steam inhalation 2-3 times a day
3. Take OTC anti inflammatory medicines such as Ibuprofen or Diclofenac for pain relief.
4. If the symptoms persist consult your doctor
