default
Posted on Fri, 28 Nov 2014
Question: I have a question about missed periods. I haven't had my period for 4 months now. Went to the doctor I'm not pregnant they then started me on birth control and said my period should come during the last week of the pills and it still has not. Should I visit a gyno? What kind of tests should I get if any? Should I just wait it out for a few more months?

Brief Answer:
WAIT FOR A WEEK MORE

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for the update.
Well, not having a period for 4 months is not normal.
At times mild delay for a few days might be caused by stress, anxiety, emotional turbulence, unaccustomed exercise, weight fluctuations, travelling, smoking, drinking, change in diet or sleep patterns etc.
However, 4 months is a long time.
The commonest reason for this could be PCOD - polycystic ovarian disease, other conditions like hypothyroidism, endometrial hyperplasia etc need to be ruled out.
To answer your question, do not see a gynecologist right away.
Wait till you finish the current pack of birth control.
You should have withdrawal bleeding then ( wait for a week more ).
If you have your period, then consult a gynecologist the next time irregular cycles happen.
If you fail to menstruate after finishing the pill pack ( current one), see a gynecologist right away.
You would need the following assessment -
1. An internal exam.
2. A pelvic transvaginal ultrasound scan.
3. Hormonal assay - FSH, LH, TSH, Prolactin, OGTT, DHEAS, Free testosterone, Lipid profile.
All the best
Please feel free to discuss further.
