default
Posted on Wed, 3 May 2017
Question: My son was hit in his left eye at a ball game with subsequent damage such as bruising, swelling and laceration. After Cat scan there appeared no significant damage and was put on steroid and antibiotic. Back history he suffered a stroke on the left side of his brain earlier this month. He now c/o of feeling "fuzzy" on that side and has a dilated pupil. Could this be from meds or something else??

Brief Answer:
Dilated pupil is most likely from medications.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for posting your query.

I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist, and would try my best to help you.

I have noted your son's clinical details. Based on this, the brain seems to be normal on CT scan. Therefore, the dilated pupil in one eye is not related to brain injury. It is most likely due to medications. For eye check up, ophthalmologists use an eye drop to dilate the pupil.

If the dilated pupil persists, we need to check his vision, as it could also occur due to local trauma in the eye. As long as there is no severe headache and there is no drowsiness, there is no need to worry.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
