Brief Answer:
different possible causes
Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic
Dizziness is a common problem. There are different causes but most often it is related to the
inner ear.
The inner ear plays an important role in balance and any issues related to it can cause dizziness.
The 3 main inner ear causes of dizziness are called: (1) vestibular neuronitis- in this case the dizzy feeling lasts for hours to days at a time
(2) menieres - in this case the feeling lasts for minutes to hours and is associated with
nausea,
hearing loss and
tinnitus (ringing , beating or other abnormal sounds in the ear)
(3) BPPV (stands for benign paroxysmal positional
vertigo)- in this case the dizziness lasts for a few seconds to minutes and is worse in certain positions of the head.
This a possible cause of your dizziness since you said that it is occuring when you get up.
To determine if this is the case, your doctor will do certain maneuvers to check the inner ear.
If BPPV is the cause of your symptoms then he or she will then do particular maneuvers to try and help return the inner ear to normal. These maneuvers are called the
epley maneuver and semont maneuvers.
The dizziness related to BPPV can sometimes last up to 6 weeks in some persons despite treatment.
The only other cause of dizziness when moving from a sitting or lying position to a standing position is a drop in blood pressure.
It would be best to visit your doctor for an assessment which would include assessment of the inner ear and also checking your blood pressure in different positions.
If it is related to the blood pressure, your doctor would advise increased fluid intake (fluid helps to increase blood pressure) and also standing slowly so that the blood has time to adjust.
I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
