What Causes Dropping Of Cheeks?

default
Posted on Wed, 24 Dec 2014
Question: Hello I have previously asked a number of neurologists about my situation however I forgot to ask something. Basically I thought my cheek has drooped slightly but I found out it hasn't but what I did find out is that the neuropathy I'm experiencing in my face is making my cheek look a bit puffy like a bouncy castle.... Thats why i thought it drooped. I'm just wondering is there any medication that will make the inflammation go away or reduce it?

Brief Answer:
Needs workup for facial swelling

Detailed Answer:
Hello

My name is Dr Muhammad Ali Rauf & i will look into your problem.

I have gone through your query and would try to help you in the best possible way. There are a number of conditions that may cause facial swelling. Medication depends upon the cause. Your previous discussions concluded to get an appointment for a neurologist to rule out trigeminal neuralgia/sensory neuropathy. If those have been ruled out then well n good and if not then i would suggest you to get an appointment at the earliest to clear it. Facial swelling can be because of some allergy, kidney problem or endocrine pathology. Swelling due to simple inflammation can be treated by taking NSAIDs like ibuprofen & antihistamine like levocetirizine (in case of allergy). I would suggest you to once visit hospital for detailed workup to rule out serious causes.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help if not then don't forget to close the discussion and rate it.

You cannot see it in pictures but every since I have developed some sort of neuropathy in my face it looks like there's too much skin. Can I ask can drink spiking (putting drugs in alcoholic drink) cause neuropathy in face?I have also noticed my eye looks a little different since this neuropathy in my face. I have uploaded two pics of before and after of my eye please can u see the difference. It's the outer corner bit, it used to be smaller and now it's bigger

Brief Answer:
Drug spiking may cause such symptoms

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thank you for getting back with the images. Although the quality is not good due to which i cannot differentiate much BUT there seems to be slight different margins. There could be a number of causes and most common include fluid retention, sleep deprivation, diet, alcohol & allergies. I would suggest you to get it checked by a dermatologist or medical specialist. Either one of them can examine closely, do workup if necessary and guide you further.

Drug spiking can be an important cause because alcohol causes such symptoms and if drug added in it which also has such effects, then general effect will potentiate. I would suggest you to avoid drug spiking in any case. IF drug spiking is the cause then it will take some time to resolve (till the time drug is cleared of from the body).

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help if not then don't forget to close the discussion and rate it.

Brief Answer:
Yes in most cases but process is gradual

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Yes, in most of the cases it goes away but process is gradual. Proper evaluation can be given by visiting a neurologist. Secondly, care should also be taken to avoid aggravating factors like drug spiking, sleep deprivation & other factors mentioned earlier. So keep regular follow-up with a neurosurgeon so that he can track all the records.

Brief Answer:
Recovery depends upon multiple factors

Detailed Answer:
Hello

I won't be able to give exact time. It depends upon extensive serial neurological examination, EMG & nerve conduction studies. Results of which are compiled & analyzed by a neurologist who then will tell you the approximately duration it will take to recover. So my suggestion would be to get an appointment for a neurologist.

Brief Answer:
varies from person to person

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Percentage of recovery varies from one body to another body. One can not tell definitely without complete workup. For some patients it recovers and for others it improves but persists. May the odds be against you.

Can I ask the difference in my eyes is that caused by the neuropathy in my face? Or because of the drug spiking?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Muhammad Ali Rauf (6 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Depends upon when it first appeared

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Images were not clear enough to give it a close look. You can conclude it yourself. If swelling appeared AFTER drug spiking then most probably it is the cause and will settle after drug completely excretes from the body AND provided that you don't do it again. If swelling was present before spiking then cause is other than drug spiking which as i mentioned earlier needs workup.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help if not then don't forget to close the discussion and rate it.
