What Causes Dull Rectal Pain Along With Constant Discomfort?

default
Posted on Thu, 3 Dec 2015
Question: DEEP DULL RECTAL PAIN that wakes me from sleep. For the last 10-15 years and has not gotten better or worse.
Relieved by four methods 1) Getting up for about an hour. 2) exercising my rectum (kind of like cutting it short if I was having a bowel movement). 3) Bowel movement or Water enima. 4) Passing gas (sometimes works)
I am a 55 year old male 5'9" tall. Weight 200 lbs.

Morning diet: Consists of an 8 oz.multiple fruit drink containing powder greens and a teaspoon of turmeric powder, 1 cup of dry (Cracklin oat bran) no milk, and a kiwi fruit. To include 1 egg every other day OR one cup of oatmeal with milk and brown sugar every other day. One baby aspirin. (Religiously)

Lunch diet: 1-8oz. of same fruit drink with either a half portion of a left over home cooked meal OR a bowl of canned soup,a kiwi fruit and a small container of yogurt.

Dinner diet: Home cooked meal which will be either beef, fish,or occasionally pork or seafood with the usual veggie sides with glass of ice tea. I drink maybe 1 can of coke per month.
Very seldom fried foods.
I do not and have never had any health issues.
My exercise is work which is not strenuous.
I do not have erectile disfunction and I do have a healthy non strenuous bowel movement every day with the consistency of oatmeal that is not dark in color.
What is happening?

Thank you for your answer,I think.
With that detailed description and the fact that the length of time this has been occurring,I would think you would have a much more distinct answer than to go see a doctor which is not one of my choices at this time.
Please give me all of the possible causes of this symptom.
I would like to try and narrow it down a little myself before deciding to get probed for something that may be remedied by a simple change in my diet.
Please work with me on this.

Brief Answer:
I can be proctalgia fugax, levator ani syndrome or IBS

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back. Sorry for delay. I advised for colonoscopy because the pain do occur at the time of sleep and which even wakes you up which suggest it is not functional and is organic in nature and one should find out the reason. I can understand your concerns. You may be right in the sense it is present since 10-15 years and is not worsening. So lets go with your choice.
There are many causes for the rectal pain
1. Inflammatory bowel disease especially ulcerative colitis which has also symptoms like loose stools mixed with blood
2. Anal fissure but it is severe while defecation, stool may be covered with blood
3. Infection may also be associated with fever, alteration in bowel habits
4.Rectal ulcer especially solitary rectal ulcer syndrome (SRUS), it may also be associted with blood in stool, tenesmus apart from rectal pain
5. Malignancy in rectum which may also be associted with blood in stool and lateration in bowel habbits and weight loss
6. Proctalgia fugax and levator ani syndrome both of which are due to spasm of the muscles. In this there is no other finding apart from rectal pain
7. IBS (Irritable bowel syndrome)

If we go with that rectal pain which you are having is not associted with any other symptoms then it appears to be proctalgia fugax, levator ani syndrome, or IBS

I hope this will help you and I have satisfied your query. Wish you a good health

Thank you for the answers that you have given.
I have read all of the descriptions and there is only #6 that sounds correct.
All of the other ones include bleeding or pain while defecating of which there is no sign of.
So with this knowledge is there anything that can be done in a non evasive
manner or would it be better to leave well enough alone and deal with it.

Would that be your opinion also?

Brief Answer:
it appears more to be proctalgia fugax

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back. Among these two it appears ro be proctalgia fugax. Usually the pain of proctalgia fugax is so brief and it occurs without any alarm no medicine is recommended. If you have severe, prolonged and frequent episode then trial of inhalation of salbutamol can be tried. Also what you can do is application of pressure on anorectal area by sitting on the edge of table or counter. Actually these attackes are so infrequent and brief that taking medicines for that is not practical. I hope I have satisfied your query and this will help you. Wish you a good health
