Posted on Sat, 23 Apr 2016
Question: My wife is facing the following symptoms:
Shortness of breath
Upper body pain
These occur when she walks, climbs stairs or is stressed out.
What do they indicate?
We tried Dolo Nex DT, Evion 400 and Pan D for a day. Later a known doctor suggested we try muscle relaxant Myospaz along with Pan 40 mg for 2 days. The pain has subsided but still exists for a week now.

Brief Answer:
Shortness of breath is worrisome, better to get her examined.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mr. Koushik,

Thank you for posting your health concern.

Shortness of breath on climbing stairs is not very uncommon, but it becomes significant if the breathlessness does not settle down within a minute or two.

It appears like you have already consulted a doctor for the problem and there seems to be some improvement and the issue seems to be muscle spasm.

However, given your history, I would recommend a basic set of investigations such as complete blood count (which will include haemoglobin levels), low haemoglobin levels can cause breathlessness easily. And women are particularly prone for developing low haemoglobin levels in XXXXXXX

Apart from that, I would also recommend a pulmonary function test to rule out any lung related issue, and get an echocardiography.

All this would be advised after a complete physical examination.

The further action would depend on the investigation and examination findings, so I would suggest you to consult a physician (MD internal medicine), and get your wife examined properly to rule out any serious cause before resorting to painkillers and muscle relaxants.

I hope this will be of help to you, please do write back to me if you have any more questions.

Wishing your wife a speedy recovery.

Best regards.
